Elevated
Gas Pressure Permitting Process
The
Modifications of the Massachusetts Fuel Gas Code 248 CMR 5.00
allows for requests for elevated pressure (greater than 14"w.c.
or 1/2 psig) when “ the gas utilization equipment specifically
requires higher pressure or when low pressure installation
design requires pipe size in excess of 4" IPS and the
piping load is detrimental to the building structure.”
The following requirements are necessary in order for Bay State
Gas Company and the Commonwealth of Massachusetts to consider
an application for elevated natural gas pressure for a facility.
Before
completing the application, contact your Bay State Gas, Commercial
Sales Representative to determine if elevated pressure is available
in your area. Your BSG representative can be found under the “Contact
Us” section of our Natural Gas Online newsletter or by
calling 1-GAS-IS-IT (1-877-427-4748).
Customers
must first submit an Application for Elevated Gas Pressure to
Bay State Gas Company for approval. An application can be found
on the state’s website at www.mass.gov/dpl/boards/pl/forms.htm The
application should be accompanied by a detailed equipment listing
that includes the BTU input rating and required pressure
for each piece of equipment to be serviced by the associated
natural gas meter. Upon completion, this application should be
mailed to your Bay State Gas Commercial Sales Rep.
If elevated pressure is available, Bay State Gas will review
the application and upon approval return it to the customer.
It is
the customer’s responsibility to forward the application
to the Board of State Examiners of Plumbers and Gasfitters, along
with the required payment ($75) and a copy of the piping plans.
All submitted plans, diagrams, and schematics must be stamped and
signed by a Massachusetts Registered Professional Engineer. Typically,
the turn around time at the state is 3-6 weeks.
 |
The
piping diagram must show the gas meter, all gas fired equipment
(existing and new), their respective maximum
input firing rate(s), pipe diameters, and pipe lengths.
|
 |
If
the equipment specifically requires elevated pressure,
a copy of the equipment specifications indicating the required
pressure shall be included.
|
 |
All elevated gas piping, fittings, and controls
subject to the elevated pressure shall be welded.
|
 |
Modifications
to existing threaded systems will be evaluated on an individual
basis.
|
Once you are granted approval, send a copy of the
approval to Bay State Gas Company. Be sure to keep a copy at
the facility for future reference.
If at any time gas piping associated with the elevated pressure gas meter is
altered, a new application must be made. Please contact your Bay State Gas, Commercial
Sales Representative with any questions or concerns.
