Northern Utilities has been serving the energy needs of New Englanders for over 150 years.

    1849 Portland Gas Light Company is founded, reportedly the third oldest in the counry.
    1966 Northern Utilities, Inc. is formed with the merger of the Portland Gas Light Company and Lewiston Gas Light Company.
    1969 Allied New Hampshire Gas Company is acquired by Northern Utilities.
    1979 Northern Utilities becomes a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bay State Gas.
    1987 The Portland Gas Pipeline is converted from oil to natural gas and is leased by Northern Utilities.
    1991 Plans for construction begin on the Portland Natural Gas Transmission System.
    1999 The Portland Natural Gas Transmission System begins natural gas deliveries from Western Canada to Northern New England. Bay State Gas is a founding member of the consortium responsible for building and operating the pipeline.
    2000 NiSource Inc. merges with Columbia Energy Group to establish the largest U.S. natural gas distributor east of the Rocky Mountains, with wholesale and retail gas and electric operations.
